According to the teachings of Paulo Freire, a quality education is the only realistic means a young person has to transcend his or her current plight in life. An education gives a young person the power to examine and to question not only him or herself but also the world. Simply put, a quality education is freedom.
In order to provide the very best education to the children of Philadelphia, the Freire Charter School must rely on more than the public tax dollars that provide us with the base of our funding. We must rely on the generosity of individuals and businesses who donate their services and/or money for our students truly to compete with their peers across the nation. We must rely on people like you.
With your help, we can fight the gross disparity of resources that exists between students of privilege and those of poverty. Compare these startling numbers:
2005-2006 Total Spending per Student
Lower Merion School District (SD) $21,477 New Hope-Solebury SD $20,916 Jenkintown SD $18,876 Springfield Township SD $17,879 Radnor SD $17,209 Philadelphia SD $10,907 Freire Charter SD $7,500
Clearly there is a connection between spending per pupil and student achievement. It is easy to be a top school district when a top district has almost three times the funding per student that Freire does. Imagine what Freire students would be capable of if only society valued their education as much as it does the education of students who reside in the suburbs. Once the playing field is leveled, let us see just what group of students can outperform whom.
If you would like to help the students of Freire reach their true potential, please contact Kelly Davenport, Head of School, at kelly@freirecharterschool.org or (215) 592-4252 ext. 1356. As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, all in kind and cash donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
